Doing Time On The Outside: Deconstructing The Benevolent Community.

Canada, like other industrialized nations, has become increasingly reliant on conditional release programs in that the majority of criminalized men and women are now under some form of localized control.. The success rates of women who complete their conditional sentences are quite high. The official recidivism rate for federally sentenced women is roughly 22 per cent, compared with 59 per cent for men. Furthermore, only 1 to 2 per cent of women returning to prison have committed a new crime while the majority are reaprehended for technical or administrative breaches of their untenable parole conditions. Given the high numbers of women who complete their conditional release, it is far more fruitful to refocus attention to those who stay out of prison rather to narrow our gaze to those who go back.
